WIVB: Two WNY entrepreneurs working to bring sewing to a new generation

Two WNY entrepreneurs are bringing the art of sewing to the next generation.

Mary Grabenstatter is the founder of Needle Sharp, a first-of-its kind sewing subscription box, based out of her residence.

Arlene Kaye, a veteran of the fashion industry, started her business, Fashion Lab NY last November. Fashion Lab is a skill-based learning studio which caters to ages seven to adult.

"Sewing is not only a skill, but I've seen kids and adults transform here, gaining more confidence- it's a great social activity, it's great to sew with other people," Kaye said.

Buffalo Rising: Two Female Entrepreneurs Connect Through Sewing to offer Stowe Project Bag Sewing Workshop

Arlene Kaye of Fashion Lab NY and Mary Grabenstatter of Needle Sharp have come together to collaborate on a new sewing offering. While Fashion Lab NY specializes in teaching people of all ages and abilities the fundamentals of fashion through sewing, illustration, and branding, Needle Sharp is in the business of selling monthly subscription sewing kits that enable clients to create various garments. Together, the pair have come up with a good fit, which is allowing them to grow their respective businesses, while supporting each other at the same time.

UpstartNY: The art and science of fashion

New business continues to migrate over to Hertel Avenue, and an appetite for high fashion along with it.

Arlene Kaye established Fashion Lab NY to provide young women and girls interested in fashion marketing, design, and merchandising with the opportunity to work in their field. Through specialty programming and workshops á la “Project Runway,” participants learn the technical skills needed to succeed in the fashion industry.

Buffalo Rising: Fashion Lab NY | The Art and Science of Fashion

A new skill-based learning studio designed around fashion is opening on Hertel. This is not your everyday fashion enterprise, rather this is one that is based on teaching the Art and Science of Fashion Fundamentals – design, sewing and branding. From year round fashion camps to labs and workshops, Fashion Lab NY (FLNY) will offer people of all ages the ability to learn the ins and outs of the Art and Science of the Fashion Design Process. These art/artisan skills include sewing, sketching (illustration), trend spotting, and creating fashion brands.
